Olanzapine Prolongs Clozapine-Induced Neutropenia In Otherwise Healthy Male

August 22, 2011
Psychiatry Weekly

Check this case report published in Psychiatry Weekly, Volume 6, Issue 17, August 22, 2011.

This report raises concerns about the hematological safety profile of olanzapine during the phase immediately following discontinuation of clozapine for hematological reasons.
This report also explains the need to consider antipsychotics other than olanazapine in patients with clozapine-induced neutropenia to avoid further drop in neutrophil count.
It also demonstrated that patients with no change in neutrophil count on olanzapine as monotherapy can have a significant drop and, or prolongation of drop, in ANC while receiving olanzapine following clozapine-induced neutropenia.
